Frank Scolyer (1924 - 2006)
Frank Scolyer was born at Wynyard in 1924. His family moved
to Mengha where he was living when he enlisted in the army
and was sent to the Pacific during the second world war.
When he was discharged he returned to Mengha. Later he
married Margaret Blizzard. Frank joined the Circular Head
Band and he was later persuaded by Trevor Reid to shift to
Burnie and join the Brass Band.
Frank was a very competent and keen musician. He transported
Juniors to practice, coached them and wrote music for them.
He and Margaret had nine children. 5 boys and one of his
daughters followed in his footsteps and are good musicians.
His dedication to his music and his wicked sense of humour
make him sorelly missed by the Band members and associates.
Frank wrote numerous arrangements of music for the band and
one of his marches titled Burnie's Own
was more or less adopted as the Bands official tune. You
can listen to or download a WAV file of Burnie's Own
from the Media
section of this website..
In 2004 the City of Burnie Brass Band decided to change the
name of its annual Bands Person of the Year award to the
Frank Scolyer Trophy in honour of Frank.
The trophy consists of a large clock mounted on a
attractive wooden backing with gold coloured metallic labels
engraved with each winner attached to its surface. It
proudly hangs in the band room to this day.
